Upcoming METRO Webinar, June 21

Join us in METRO’s Online Training Center on Monday, June 21st from 1:00pm-2:00pm for the second installment of our Summer webinar series. “Expanding the Digital Library Program Within the Institution: Turning Curators into Publishers” will explore the Columbia University Libraries’ strategies for increasing online access to special collections using open source software. Joanna DiPasquale, Web and New Technologies Developer at Columbia, will discuss the libraries’ use of Fedora and Omeka to put curatorial staff in control of a collection-oriented Web publishing tool, while ensuring adherence to best practices. She will also address the needs, implementation, and “lessons learned” over the course of the project.

Job Description: Works with other State Library Staff in achieving objectives of the State Library’s long-range plan. Participates in the strategic planning and implementation of State Library sponsored statewide programs and the identification of potential partners.

Consults with public library directors on issues of management, including, but not limited to planning, policymaking, budgeting, and personnel.

Consults with public library trustees on advocacy, planning, policymaking, budgeting, and community partnerships.

Maintains awareness of current library trends and developments through professional reading, conference attendance and organization participation.

Works with other State Library staff to assess staff development needs for the library community.

Assists in the planning and organization of State Library sponsored training activities for library staff at all levels. Provide specialized training for library’s staff based on needs and requests of library directors.

General consulting to all types of libraries, on a variety of management topics, including, but not limited to reference and public services (including children/youth services), policy development, board development and training, staff development and training, technology, budgeting, strategic planning, and advocacy.
Works under the general direction of the Director of Library Development Services.

Qualifications: Specialized knowledge in library functions and operations. Proficient in project management, interpersonal relations, networking, consulting, planning, priority setting, and technology. Thorough knowledge of staff development principles. Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written), ability to work independently and exercise initiatives, ability to establish effective working relationships with outside agencies, governing boards, public officials and the general public, and organize and present information through reports and public presentations. Master's degree in library science from an ALA accredited college or university and four years appropriate professional library experience.

Compensation: $36,840 - $68,160

Position Summary:
The Burke Library at the Union Theological Seminary (Columbia University) seeks an experienced professional to serve as the Public Services Librarian. Reporting to the Director, the incumbent will creatively develop, coordinate, and promote unmediated and mediated access to the Burke Library and its collections for Columbia, Union Theological Seminary, as well as the broader community. Additionally, the incumbent will exercise direct responsibility for providing instructional and research support for the Library’s collections and information resources, and supervise two library support staff and a number of student assistants.

The responsibilities of this position include developing and executing in-person, print, and online information literacy instruction and other library educational programs (library orientations, workshops, credit bearing courses, in-class sessions, online guides, lectures, and other community outreach programs). Furthermore, the Public Services Librarian serves as the coordinator of library access services and student assistant staffing (Circulation, Reserves, ILL, Document Delivery, and Reader Services), with collaborative provision of reference and research services. Additional management of the circulating and reference collections is also necessary. The incumbent is also responsible for the preparation and promotion of exhibitions of special collections materials.

Required Qualifications:
MLIS from ALA accredited school and 2-3 years related experience (or an equivalent of education and experience). Strong organizational skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, commitment to public services and to theological education, ability to work collaboratively with other staff in inter-departmental projects, and supervisory skills

Preferred Qualifications:
Specialized knowledge in Biblical Studies or Church History; technical proficiency and interest in new technologies for teaching, learning, and content provision; teaching proficiency and experience; foreign language expertise; graduate degree in Theology/Religion.

Description of duties:
