Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library
The Beinecke Library is Yale's principal repository for literary papers and early manuscripts and rare books. In addition to distinguished general collections, the library houses the Osborn Collection, noted for its British and literary and historical manuscripts, and outstanding special collections devoted to American literature, German literature, and Western Americana. The Beinecke’s collections include materials ranging from medieval manuscripts to born-digital electronic records, audio and video. The Beinecke has undertaken an ambitious digitization program and offers online access to over 150,000 images through its Digital Images Online database, as well as access to streaming audio and video, and to a host of online exhibitions and digital projects involving blogs, podcasts, and social-tagging. The Beinecke is currently engaged in bringing intentionality to the development of the Library’s digital resources and projects, and to providing responsive and effective services to online users of the Beinecke’s materials as well as thoughtful integration with other digital efforts at Yale. General Purpose
Under the general direction of the Head of Technical Services and working in close collaboration with the Head of Technology and Digital Assets, the Digital Imaging Studio Production Manager, and units across the Beinecke Library, the Head of Digital Projects & Metadata plays a leading role in creating, describing, and delivering digitized resources and in exploring, proposing, and developing innovative tools and services that improve the ability of scholars, students, and educators to make use of existing and emerging digital resources.

Responsibilities
The Head of Digital Projects & Metadata is responsible for the day-to-day management of a variety of digital projects and is responsible for overseeing and creating metadata across a wide range of materials including manuscripts, photographs, ephemera, art objects, maps, prints and drawings, books, and other printed material. The Head of Digital Projects & Metadata provides leadership and technical expertise in the investigation and application of new metadata standards; defines input standards; devises quality control routines; proposes local policies and procedures; maintains and enhances current metadata infrastructure and practices; prepares and evaluates material for digital capture; participates in managing the workflow of the Digital Studio and coordinates and supervises metadata creation by staff, student assistants, and interns; hires and supervises Digital Projects & Metadata staff; provides guidance, training, skill development, and performance evaluation; participates in the formulation of policies and procedures for the Technical Services Department. The Head of Digital Projects & Metadata is a liaison to the Technology and Digital Assets Department and works collaboratively with other Library staff to develop and employ improved interfaces and delivery tools. The Head of Digital Projects & Metadata represents the Beinecke in Yale University Library-wide and nationally, in discussions and committees pertaining to metadata, cataloging standards, and digital initiatives for digital library development at Yale, and is active professionally. May be required to assist with disaster recovery efforts. May be assigned to work on West Campus.

Qualifications
MLS from an ALA-accredited library science program. Cataloging experience in a research or academic library setting, preferably with special collections materials. Demonstrated familiarity with the basic principles and standards for descriptive cataloging of rare printed materials, archival and manuscript material, or visual materials. Knowledge of established and emerging metadata schemes (Dublin Core, EAD, EAC-CPF,MODS, MARC, VRA Core, CDWA), content standards (AACR2, DCRM, DACS, CCO), and thesauri (LCSH, NAF, AAT, TGM). Bibliographic knowledge of at least one modern Western European language. Excellent technical aptitude with computer applications such as MS Excel and MS Access. Experience with library management systems such as Voyager. Experience with digital reformatting projects; experience with project management tools and techniques; demonstrated ability to use databases and develop functional requirements for them; knowledge of the principles, standards, and technological framework of digital preservation; strong commitment to enhancing service through teamwork and responsiveness to clients and project partners, both internal and external. Ability to excel in a rapidly changing environment. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across units, organize and coordinate work, handle multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and be an effective contributor to a production-oriented, project environment. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Supervisory experience required. One year of professional experience required. For appointment to the rank of Librarian II requires two years of professional experience and professional accomplishments. THE ROBERT B. HAAS FAMILY ARTS LIBRARY
The Haas Family Arts Library at Yale consists of collections from three (FOUR) formerly-separate operating units: Art and Architecture, Arts of the Book, Drama and (ADD) the Visual Resources Collection. Now located under one roof, these libraries support arts-area programming at Yale, including the Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama, and the department of the History of Art, as well as the teaching and research needs of the Yale community beyond the visual arts. In addition, the Arts Library houses several prominent archival and special collections in Art and Architecture, Arts of the Book, and Drama, ranging from type specimens and woodblocks to theatrical archives to one of the world's foremost collection of books on color.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Yale University Library welcomes applications and nominations for the 2012/13 Kress Fellowship in Art Librarianship. The Kress Fellowship is intended for a recent graduate from library school who wishes to pursue a career in art librarianship. This fellowship is made possible through the generosity of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. Through this fellowship, the Kress Foundation seeks to achieve in the field of art librarianship what it has accomplished for art history and art conservation: ensuring the growth of the discipline by promoting the advancement of new professionals.

The Haas Family Arts Library at Yale serves a distinguished array of academic and museum programs, architects, artists and scholars. Kress Fellows have the opportunity to interact routinely with faculty, staff and students in distinguished Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama; a nationally ranked department of the History of Art; and two outstanding university art museums, the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. They also have occasion to collaborate with colleagues from throughout the Yale University Library, including the Sterling Memorial Library, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and the library and rare books department of the Yale Center for British Art. The rich professional and scholarly resources of New York City and Boston's art libraries and museums are within two hours travel, providing still further opportunities for professional growth and professional contact with colleagues.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This year the focus of the Kress Fellowship will be on public services librarianship, specializing in architecture and design, which will include experience in reference services and library research education. During their tenure at Yale, Kress Fellows are expected to pursue a mutually agreed-upon project resulting in a publishable paper or a new library service (such as a webpage or research guide). Kress Fellows are also introduced to a broad spectrum of professional activities and may have the opportunity to perform collection development activities or assist with library-based exhibitions. Kress Fellows also participate in library planning committees and task forces and engage in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and other collaborative activities. Expected to be professionally active and represent the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community. May be required to participate with disaster recovery efforts. May be assigned to work at West Campus location in West Haven, CT.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science. Excellent analytical, organizational, management, customer service, and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively build partnerships and promote the benefits of change in an academic culture that often values ambiguity, diversity of opinion, and historic precedent. Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written expression. Ability to work both independently and collegially in a demanding and rapidly changing environment.

Preferred: Advanced degree and/or relevant experience in history of art, architecture or related arts disciplines. Experience with web design and development and electronic information resources. Experience with HTML and XML. Reading knowledge of two or more Western European languages.

The Medical Library: The Harvey Cushing / John Hay Whitney Medical Library, with a collection of more than 450,000 volumes, 10,000 online journals and a wide range of state-of the art electronic services, serves the Yale Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, the Yale-New Haven Hospital and other affiliated institutions of the Yale-New Haven Medical Center. Library staff works together as a team to provide responsive and effective information support to the Medical Center's missions of research, education, and patient care. There is a continuing effort to use technology fully to facilitate patron access to information from library, campus, or remote locations.

The Position: The Head of Collection Development & Management provides leadership and vision in developing and sustaining collection development activities at the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library. Specific areas of responsibilities include resource selection, license and product negotiation, vendor relations, acquisitions, bibliographic control, collection analysis and assessment, and collections budget development and management. The position will be knowledgeable about innovations and changes in the profession, as well as in the scholarly publishing industry. The position will serve as a member of the Medical Library’s senior management team, and report to the Director of the Medical Library.

The Head of Collection Development & Management supervises collection management staff (3 FTE), and directs collections-related projects. The position acts as liaison to the central Collections, Acquisitions, and Cataloging Departments, and keeps current with changing system-wide policies and procedures in which the Medical Library is increasingly integrated. Chairs the Medical Library’s Collection Development Committee charged to provide guidance and decision support to the Director of the Medical Library on collection development and related matters. Collaborates with staff throughout the Yale University Library on best approaches to resource expenditures and coordinated collection development and management.

Responsibilities

• Outreach and public services responsibilities, including participation in the Medical Library’s departmental liaison and personal librarian programs.
• Works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and researchers to identify resources and collections for research, teaching and clinical care.
• Manage funds of the Medical Historical and Nursing Libraries.
• Evaluates and implements new practices, services and tools to increase the efficiency of collection management processes and workflows.
• Compile and analyze collection usage data from a variety of sources to support data-driven collection development decisions and comply with university library and national library association statistical reporting requirements.
• Works closely with the Medical Library’s Business Manager, the History of Medicine Librarian and the Director to insure the effective management of general account and endowed collection funds, in accordance with university fiscal policies. Collaborates on projects and services.
• Expected to be professionally active and to represent the Library and University in the academic, scholarly and professional community.
• May be required to participate with disaster recovery efforts.

Qualifications

• M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited library school, with a minimum of two years of professional library experience and professional accomplishments, preferably in an academic setting. For appointment at the LIII level, requires five years professional library experience and professional accomplishments, preferably in an academic setting.
• Experience managing library technical services with an emphasis on electronic resources management, including acquisitions, collection development and management, and vendor relations.

• Experience and understanding with library collections and biomedical information resources, as well as knowledge of health science libraries and their evolving roles in medical education, biomedical research, clinical practice and scholarly communication.
• At least two years of demonstrated supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of the complex, ever-changing electronic publishing environment and scholarly communications issues; experience negotiating licenses for electronic content; experience with electronic resource management systems; experience with analyzing usage statistics (e.g. COUNTER compliant usage statistics).
• Experience with use of integrated library systems and OpenURL link resolvers; understanding of emerging metadata and digitization standards.
• Ability to plan, initiate, and implement effective programs, projects and services.
• Experience in vendor and publisher relations and in conducting license and product negotiations.
• Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to solve problems and manage complex workflows.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under the general guidance of the Law Librarian and collaborating closely with the Curator for Foreign, Comparative, and International Law, the Associate Law Librarian for Foreign, Comparative, and International Law develops and implements programs, services, and policies to support the provision of unparalleled foreign, comparative, and international legal reference and research services to law school students, faculty, and visiting scholars.

In addition, oversees and co-ordinates the work of a busy, research-oriented, complex, and technologically-advanced Reference department. Will be charged to expand a library-faculty liaison initiative, set policy directions for the coherence and effectiveness of reference services, and maintain ongoing evaluation of services to support the reference needs of the Library’s constituents.

Other responsibilities include the selection of foreign, comparative, and international law materials, in both traditional and digital formats, as well as the development of print and electronic guides, bibliographies and instructional materials in foreign, comparative, and international law, and the provision of instructional services in the areas of foreign, comparative, and international law.

Participates in library-wide policy development as a member of the Library Executive Committee and will represent the Library locally, regionally, and nationally in the professional community.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Showcases and promotes the unique and extensive foreign, comparative, and international holdings of the Law Library. Establishes programs and activities to highlight the foreign and international law collection. Prepares and teaches research classes and seminars in Foreign, International, and Comparative Law. Manages general reference services and provides leadership and direction to an extensive staff of reference librarians in the execution of excellent research and reference services.

Supervises the work of professional librarians, staff, and students.

Coordinates with the Head of Instructional Services in the provision of instruction in American legal research skills for international students. Prepares and updates research guides, web pages, blogs, and other appropriate social media for foreign and international law topics. Collaborates with the Curator for Foreign, Comparative, and International Law in the evaluation and selection of foreign and international legal materials in all formats. Undertakes responsibility for specific jurisdictions and for recommending acquisitions procedures and policies for foreign and international materials.

Participates in library planning committees and task forces and engages in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and collaborative activities. Expected to be professionally active and represents the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community. May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science and JD from an ABA-accredited program (or foreign equivalent), and at least five years of professional experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Appointment to the rank of Librarian IV requires at least eight years of professional experience and professional achievements. Within the University Library, Technical Services departments pursue a course of continual change and innovation in building integrated, university-wide information access systems. These systems are designed to provide readers timely access to new materials in all formats as well as a high-quality bibliographic record of Yale's extraordinary library collections, which have developed over the last three centuries. Our collections continue to grow at more than 200,000 volumes per year, including an increasing number of materials in digital form. The Library’s serials collection consists of over 90,000 currently received print titles and over 63,000 titles in electronic format. Yale is a member of the NERL Consortium and the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), contributing to the NACO and BIBCO programs.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Head of Acquisitions under the Library’s Technical Services Division, the Continuations Management Librarian provides professional, technical, and fiscal expertise in the overall management of serials ordering, receiving, maintenance, migration of print to electronic, preparation for binding, renewals, and payment. Manages the work of the continuations unit and supervise six clerical and technical staff. Works collaboratively Library-wide with all acquisitions units, selectors, catalogers, Electronic Collections department, Information Technology Office, Access Services, and preparations and binding units, to assure maximum accountability for our print continuations holdings, for both periodicals and standing orders. Works collaboratively with Electronic Collections to develop best practices to support the management of continuations as the Library migrates titles from print to electronic. Keeps abreast of trends in continuations management through research and participation in professional organizations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Develops sustainable continuations management program and standards for the Library. Assesses continuations practices of departments/units throughout the Library and develops policies and procedures for managing and ensuring accountability of all print continuation-type materials. Develops a mastery of the Voyager acquisitions/serials module to support maximum utilization. Develops best practices for the management of serials and standing orders, including the receiving process, ongoing maintenance, recording payments and maintaining statistics. Makes recommendations for staffing needs and level of expertise needed for continuations units. Develops best practices for continuations received as part of exchange programs, approval plans, or blanket orders.

Develops a program for systematic and retrospective clean-up of continuations. Identifies problems that have evolved in continuations management from ordering through binding. Working with staff throughout the Library, develops a program for systematic clean-up of purchase orders and holdings. Coordinates and liaises with Electronic Collections department. Working in coordination with Electronic Collections, develops best practices for moving periodical titles from print to electronic, assuring licenses are in place and the new format offers the desired coverage, before canceling the print.

Anticipates and plans for future developments in continuations management and Library technical services. Through research, seminars, conferences, site-visits and open discussions with other continuations librarians, expands knowledge, stays abreast of changes and practices within the profession. Participates in Library planning committees and task forces and engages in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and collaborative activities. Expected to be professionally active and represents the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community. May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts. May be assigned to work at West Campus location in West Haven, CT.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science and a minimum of two years of professional technical services experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Appointment to the Librarian III rank requires at least five years of professional experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Successful supervisory experience. Experience with an integrated library management system (Voyager preferred).

Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in serials management for print and electronic formats. Knowledge of serials cataloging standards. Demonstrated ability to initiate and adapt to change. Excellent organizational and analytical skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of, or experience with, OCLC bibliographic utility. YALE CENTER FOR BRITISH ART

The Yale Center for British Art (YCBA), both a research institute and a public museum, houses the largest collection of British paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, rare books and manuscripts outside Great Britain. GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the supervision of the Chief Librarian of the Yale Center for British Art Reference Library and Archives, assists in the day-to-day activities of the Library including reference services, bibliographic instruction, and the planning and implementation of public service policies and activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Shares responsibility for reference services. Shares responsibility for bibliographic instruction and outreach activities for students in the Yale History of Art program, Center staff and Visiting Scholars. Manages the Field Librarian Program in conjunction with History of Art courses taught at the Center. THE MIDDLE EAST COLLECTION
Yale was the first among American colleges and universities to support and encourage the study of Arabic and Islamic literature and culture. The first professor of Arabic, Edward Elbridge Salisbury, was appointed in 1841, the only scholar with this specialty in the United States. In more than 150 years since that appointment, Yale has developed an extensive and internationally regarded collection of materials, including well over 400,000 volumes that support Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies. These works appear in many languages and are housed in several libraries and collections. Volumes in the vernacular languages (especially Arabic, Persian, and Turkish) exceed 150,000. An outstanding collection of more than 6,000 manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman Turkish, dealing with various subjects, resides in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The Library receives nearly 1,000 active serials relating to Middle Eastern Studies, plus major American and European scholarly journals in the field. As one of the oldest collections among the major Middle Eastern collections in the United States, it forms a key component of the national resource for the study of the Middle East. The Yale Library is particularly renowned in recent years for ground-breaking work in the digitization and full-text searchability of Arabic scholarly journals and related materials, through its International Digital Projects group. Yale offers Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in disciplines related to the Middle East, and it continues to attract highly qualified graduate students from the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

THE LATIN AMERICAN COLLECTION
The Latin American Collection at Yale is responsible for the development of a strong research collection of materials from Latin America that meets the information needs of faculty, students and other scholars in the Yale community. The Collection selects and acquires materials published in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. It is considered to be one of the foremost collections in the United States, containing a wealth of research material and offering a variety of research opportunities for Latin American studies. The collection comprises over 530,000 printed volumes, including monographs, serials, newspapers, and government documents. It has subscriptions to over 3,500 Latin American periodicals and monographic series. Most of these works are in the principal languages of the region, Spanish and Portuguese, but also included are many publications in French, English, Dutch, Creole, and Latin American indigenous languages. In addition to printed matter, there is a rich collection of manuscript material, a microfilm collection of over 15,000 reels, as well as such non-book materials as photographs, documentary film, sound recordings, and sheet maps. The collection is mainly housed in Sterling Memorial Library, but there are sizeable Latin American holdings in the Economic Growth Center Collection, and the Beinecke, Divinity, Social Science, Art, Music, and Law libraries. As one of the oldest collections among the major Latin American collections in the United States, it forms the core of the national resource for the study of Latin Americana.

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science and a graduate degree in a field relevant to Latin American studies -OR- a graduate degree in a field relevant to Latin American studies and an equivalent combination of relevant library experience. Appointment to the rank of Librarian II requires a minimum of two years of professional experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Appointment to the Librarian III rank requires at least five years of professional experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Experience with teaching in a library or academic setting. Experience with the creation and use of digitized content for research and teaching. Experience in creating content for Web pages.

Fluency/proficiency in Spanish and ability to work in at least one other Western European language, preferably Portuguese, as well as excellent communication skills in English. Familiarity with the history of, and current trends in, scholarly research related to Latin American studies. Familiarity with the major bibliographic tools used for Latin American studies and a knowledge of the current book trade in Latin America. Demonstrated ability to succeed in a collaborative, team-based environment. Demonstrated ability to work collegially and cooperatively within and across organizations. Demonstrated initiative and proactive engagement. Knowledge of trends in networked access to information, social networking, citation management, course management systems, digitization, and other technologies used by readers and libraries to facilitate information access and management. Preferred: Ability to plan, manage, and coordinate complex projects; demonstrated record of devising and bringing projects to a conclusion in a timely fashion.

THE PRESERVATION DEPARTMENT


The Yale University Library Preservation Department, started in 1971, is one of the oldest in the country. Responsible for the long-term care of the rich and unique record of human thought and creativity contained in the Yale University Library collections, it has strong administrative support and has played a major role in the development of the preservation field. The Department consists of units covering special and general collections conservation and reformatting collections, with system wide responsibilities for: the treatment of rare and special collections materials and circulating materials; mass deacidification; and staff and user education and consultation on wide variety of preservation concerns. POSITION DESCRIPTION Under the diection of the Director, Preservation Department and Chief Preservation Officer, the Head of Digital, Reformatting & Vendor Services (DRVS) plans and directs the activities of DRVS, including, but not limited to: microfilming; scanning text and conversion of audio and visual materials; overseeing the monograph binding and mass deacidification operation; and is an integral and collaborative member of the Preservation Management Team (PMT).


RESPONSIBILITIES


Facilitates access and long-term preservation of materials for format conversion. Plans, manages, and oversees the planning and performing of format conversion activities. Sets format conversion priorities on the full range of library and archival materials, in conjunction with subject specialists/selectors and curators. Establishes vendor relations and negotiates contracts for the full range of format conversion activities, commercial binding, and mass deacidification contracts. Works in close collaboration with the Library’s information technology offices, Cataloging and Metadata Services, and members of the University’s Office of Digital Assets & Infrastructure (ODAI), in development of metadata, monitoring of digital preservation metadata trends, and the ongoing development and updating of technical specifications regarding digital information capture. Works with Preservation Management Team (PMT) members to provide information and recommendations to subject specialists/selectors and curators regarding preservation implications on the acquisition of fragile paper and multi-media items, commercial binding, and mass deacidification.


Trains and supervises a team of support Clerical & Technical (C&T) staff, students, and interns. Manages the Digital Reformatting & Vendor Services (DRVS) budget. Participates in library planning, committees, and task forces, and engages in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and collaborative activities. Expected to be professionally active and represents the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community. Performs other duties as assigned. Assists in maintaining the emergency response plan and responds to emergencies and recovery efforts as needed. May be assigned to work at West Campus location in West Haven, CT.


QUALIFICATIONS


Master’s degree in computer science, arts and humanities, or from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science or a related field, and minimum of two years professional preservation experience, and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Appointment to the Librarian III rank requires at least five years of professional preservation experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advance Certificate in Preservation may substitute for one year of professional experience. Experience supervising technical and/or professional staff, demonstrating increasing management and supervisory responsibilities. Experience in managing multiple projects. Advanced knowledge of preservation principles and procedures as relating to library materials. Thorough knowledge of national standards and best practices as related to a wide range of preservation format conversion and multi-media preservation. Thorough knowledge of appropriate procedures for preserving digital objects and web-based content. Thorough knowledge of current metadata schemes and evolving best practices and standards. Technical knowledge of a wide variety of media including text, music, still images, and audio and video. Demonstrated ability to analyze, assess, and find creative preservation and archiving solutions in a complex and dynamic academic environment. Thorough knowledge of organizational and administrative policies and procedures of libraries and archives. Well-developed organizational, research, oral and written communication, analytical, teaching, and supervisory skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse working environment. Demonstrated ability to work collegially and cooperatively within and across organizations. Ability to plan, manage, and coordinate complex projects; demonstrated record of devising and bringing projects to a conclusion in a timely fashion.


Preferred:


Minimum of two years experience in the management of digital preservation activities. Education in computer or information science and programming experience. Project management training. Familiarity with commercial binding and book structure. Familiarity with web design, database development and design, and content management systems.
