Research and Instructional Services Librarian: Barnard College, Columbia University

Reporting to the Director of Research and Instructional Services (RIS) at Barnard College, Columbia University, the RIS Librarian will participate in the provision of reference, research, and instructional services to students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the Barnard and Columbia communities. The Librarian will serve as the primary liaison and personal librarian for students and faculty in the Barnard Theatre and Dance Departments and the Film Studies and Music programs and will be responsible for development, evaluation, and management of the media collection, as well as other assigned areas of the general andreference collections. He or she will provide general and specialized reference and research services at the library’s service desk. Will also deliver general and course-related instruction in library and information resources and will develop appropriate online instructional materials and subjects guides as needed. He or she will consult with Columbia University Library colleagues to coordinate the purchase of media
and related resources and also collaborate with colleagues to explore new options for the delivery of media content and then make the appropriate recommendations for purchase and implementation to the Director.

The ideal candidate will have an MLS from an ALA accredited program,
an academic degree, or work experience in a relevant subject area, with 1-3 years of academic library or related experience. Knowledge of or experience in developing and managing a media collection in all analog and digital formats, is necessary. He or she must be able to communicate effectively with faculty and students about the library’s collections and services. Must have an aptitude for or experience in teaching and developing instructional content and documentation and for developing Web-based guides that support the curricular use of the media and other collections. Familiarity with media creation and editing tools is highly desirable. He or she should be user-focused, collaborative, a creative problem solver, and committed to continuous learning.
