E-Resources / Serials Librarian: Robert W. Van Houten Library, New Jersey Institute of Technology (Newark, NJ)

NJIT seeks an energetic, self-motivated and service-oriented E-Resources / Serials Librarian at the Robert W. Van Houten Library. Working under the supervision of the University Librarian, the successful candidate will be responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, improving, evaluating and reporting upon university commercial full text, bibliographic and reference database offerings, journals, abstract and indexes and e-books including, but not limited to, access, user satisfaction, cost effectiveness, licenses and contracts, usage metrics and publicity. The position promotes consensus, teamwork, and team service improvements. The position is hands on, but also gives work direction, as required, to library assistants and student staff. Minimum qualifications:

  • Masters in Library or Information Science(ALA accredited).
  • Two years of professional librarian experience.
  • Database creation including significant experience with constructing, operating and maintaining Microsoft Access and/or similar databases.
  • Experience constructing Excel spreadsheets and using formulas.
  • Web development skills and experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills with strong attention to detail.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Successful experience with serials acquisition, claiming, and control systems.
  • Licensing and implementing access to commercial databases.
  • Working knowledge of Open URL linking.
  • Working knowledge of OCLC Serials and Voyager serials.
  • Successful experience managing e-journals, e-books, and other e-resources.
  • Successfully created LibGuides.
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies in libraries (e.g. mobile)

Project Cataloger: East Asian Collections, Cotsen Children’s Library Princeton University Library (Princeton, NJ)

The Princeton University Library comprises a large central library and nine specialized libraries that are heavily used by an academic community of 6,400 students, 1,100 faculty members, and many visiting scholars. To support the diverse needs of its users, the Library holds some six million printed volumes, ranging from incunabula to current imprints, and provides access to many other records of human knowledge, such as ancient papyri and cylinder seals, modern literary manuscripts, and recently produced electronic databases and journals. The Library employs more than 300 professional and support personnel, complemented by a large student and hourly workforce. Description: The Cotsen Children’s Library is a unit of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. It houses an important historical collection of illustrated children's books and related items. The primary responsibility of the Project Cataloger will be to assess and improve the cataloging of Chinese-language monographs and serials in Cotsen's East Asian collections. Specific tasks include: identifying duplicates and resolving holdings problems; revising descriptive cataloging to meet current standards; resolving heading conflicts and creating NACO name authority records for authors and illustrators; analyzing and correcting romanization variants. In addition to cataloging duties the Project Cataloger will provide reference for the Chinese collections and prepare a small exhibition for an East Asian Studies conference. As this is a limited-duration project, the Project Cataloger must be able to meet both quantitative and qualitative production goals. This is a challenging position for a professional who seeks to apply advanced skills in a unique environment. The Project Cataloger will work closely with both the curator of the Cotsen Children’s Library and the Department’s head of technical services.

Qualifications
Required:
MLS from an ALA accredited library school. Familiarity with relevant cataloging tools and standards including AACR2r, LCRIs, LCSH, MARC, OCLC, and bibliographic reference sources. Ability to synthesize information from different sources and reach sound bibliographic decisions. Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively. Strong reading knowledge of Chinese and ability to apply ALA-LC romanization tables.
Preferred: Cataloging experience with the Voyager integrated library system. Experience in cataloging and physical management of rare books. Knowledge of authority work, including participation in NACO. Bibliographic familiarity with an additional major East Asian language. Knowledge of children’s literature.

Term and Appointment: This is a one-year term position. The successful candidate will be appointed to an appropriate professional specialist rank for the term.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Rutgers University Libraries seek a creative, innovative, and experienced librarian to develop dynamic user services that are integrated into the academic life of the university. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Information Services and University Librarian, this is a system-wide position that oversees policies and programs that affect the three-campus library system. The AUL will also have direct management responsibility, including recruitment, appointment, evaluation, and budget authority, for the public service units on the New/Brunswick Piscataway campus, the largest campus of the university, encompassing 17 libraries, 32 faculty librarians, 74 staff, and student and hourly support staff.
The AUL will provide a vision for how the Libraries support faculty research and student learning; the AUL will actively engage with academic departments to promote information literacy and respond to the changing research environment. The AUL will stimulate innovation and creativity among Libraries faculty and staff in the use of multiple modes of service delivery; and lead in the development of user-focused services that advance university goals, including reference consultation in all formats, media services, information literacy, access services, inter-library loan and document delivery, imaging services, off-campus and distance learning, and the Web presence of the Libraries. The AUL will partner with other members of the senior management team, including the directors of the Camden and Newark campus libraries to ensure that system-wide services support and advance local campus needs. The AUL is expected to seek external support for programs and initiatives through grants, gifts, and external fund raising, and will represent the Libraries within the university, the state, and on national committees and forums related to user services.

QUALIFICATIONS: The position requires an MLS from an ALA accredited institution or an equivalent degree; minimum of five years significant and progressively responsible management experience in an academic library; ability to articulate the role of academic libraries in the support of research and instruction in a digital environment; demonstrated ability to engage librarians and staff in the collaborative planning and delivery of user-centered services; ability to work with a diverse academic community; knowledge of new information technologies, scholarly communication, and the presentation of services in a Web environment; excellent analytical, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; and a record of accomplishment in dealing with change. Ability to meet the requirements of faculty tenure with a record of scholarly accomplishment and professional service upon appointment required. Additional advanced degree preferred. Digital User Services Librarian : Rutgers University Libraries (RUL) (New Brunswick, NJ)

DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES: The Digital User Services Librarian is a new position within RUL and will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of new electronic products and services to enhance our digital users’ experience. The person in this position will take a leadership role in the continued development of digital library resources, ensuring coordination between technical and public services in the implementation and delivery of services. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to evaluating emerging technology products for potential application, overseeing aspects of citation management software integration and support, developing plans for implementation of mobile services, and enhancing the library experience of distance learners. The Digital User Services Librarian will also participate in appropriate public service activities in order to understand the RUL user perspective and needs. This is a tenure-track position within the New Brunswick Libraries Faculty, and will require the development of a research agenda, publication, and professional participation. The position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Instructional Services and interfaces with existing groups, e.g., the User Services Council and the Web Board.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Master’s degree from an ALA accredited library or information science program with a minimum 3 years library experience in user services with an emphasis on digital services and collections. Knowledge of relevant web technologies. Must be a good communicator and collaborator and be committed to user-centered services.

DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES: The Copyright and Licensing Librarian, a member of the Rutgers University Libraries Faculty, provides leadership and expertise in matters of copyright, licensing, and other intellectual property issues for the Libraries and the university community. The Copyright and Licensing Librarian is responsible for library intellectual property policies and procedures and for advising library personnel on intellectual property issues relating to library collections, services, gifts, and digital projects. The Librarian works with library faculty and staff in public services, collection development, and digital initiatives to develop policy frameworks that facilitate digital initiatives and resource acquisition. The Librarian monitors legislative developments affecting copyright and other intellectual property matters; participates in appropriate library, university, regional, and national committees and programs; and performs other duties as requested and that fall within the scope of the duties of a member of the library faculty. Working closely with the Office of Vice President and General Counsel, the Copyright and Licensing Librarian serves as the university's primary resource on fair use and other copyright issues. The Librarian advises members of the university community about issues related to the works they write or otherwise create and appropriate use of works created by others. The librarian educates faculty, staff, and students about copyright, licensing, and other intellectual property issues through workshops, websites, consultations, etc. This is a tenure-track faculty position, requiring research and publications, and active participation in professional associations. This position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Planning and Organizational Research.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA accredited master's degree in Library and Information Science; demonstrated knowledge of copyright, licensing, and other intellectual property issues within higher education; familiarity with new and traditional modes of scholarly communication; excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; strong service orientation and commitment to the profession; ability to work within a diverse community; and collegial, team-focused, management orientation. Preferred: Master’s degree in Library Science and law degree combination; recent experience with or knowledge of collection development, especially as it relates to digital resources, licensing and other contract issues, and trends in the commercial and scholarly publishing industries would be highly desirable.

Responsibilities:
The Head of Library Instruction and Undergraduate Outreach designs and implements innovative library services and instruction programs that provide students with strong foundational experiences in information discovery, retrieval and evaluation in support of the university’s general education requirements. Drawing upon the resources of a world-class research institution dedicated to undergraduate teaching, this position provides leadership and vision within the library and on campus to ensure that Princeton students develop the necessary information discovery and analysis skills needed to carry out successful independent research that is a hallmark of the undergraduate experience at Princeton. This position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Instructional Services.
General responsibilities include:
  • applying professional expertise in the design, delivery, management, and assessment of library instructional services;
  • developing a coordinated library instruction program in collaboration with liaison librarians, teaching faculty, and campus partners offering instructional technology and pedagogical services;
  • organizing and leading library-wide training opportunities on effective teaching and student learning;
  • participating in the delivery of general reference and research consultation services, which may involve occasional evening and weekend work;
  • contributing to library operations and initiatives through leadership and participation on committees, task forces, and working groups as assigned; and
  • representing Princeton in relevant professional and scholarly organizations.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library science;
  • minimum of 2 years of experience in the delivery of library instruction in an academic or research library;
  • demonstrated understanding of the information needs and information-seeking habits of undergraduates;
  • experience using web applications and technologies in the delivery of instruction;

Description: The Department of Rare Books and Special Collections has created a two-year professional position for an Assistant Curator of Manuscripts, whose work under the direct supervision of the Curator of Manuscripts will provide training opportunities and mentoring relationships that will allow the individual selected to pursue a curatorial career in special collections at a major American research library. The Assistant Curator will work and participate in the ongoing activities of the Department, especially public services, responding to reference queries, and curriculum support on campus through class visits, bibliographic instruction, and outreach. The Assistant Curator will also participate in other activities and special projects related to the Manuscripts Division, such as collection development, arrangement and description, cataloging and physical description of bound manuscripts, EAD (Encoded Archival Description), preservation assessment, digital projects (especially preparation of metadata), exhibitions, public programs, and grant writing. There will be opportunities to evaluate offerings from potential donors; and review catalogues from antiquarian booksellers and auction houses.

Candidates for the position of Assistant Curator must have a strong subject background and research experience in areas of collections strength in the Manuscripts Division, particularly English literature and American history; and a commitment to pursuing a career in special collections librarianship, especially in relationship to literary and historical manuscripts, 18th-19th centuries. Emphasis will be placed on two areas of activity:

(1) Improved access to and preservation of the Robert H. As a key member of the University Human Resources Client Services Team, the Training and Employee Relations Specialist reports to the Senior HR Manager responsible for the University Library. The incumbent is expected to lead the Library Education and Training Committee (LETC), work collaboratively with internal and external resources to coordinate the delivery of training programs, participate in meetings, workshops and retreats and assist the Senior HR Manager in the resolution of employee/labor relations problems and concerns.

Major Project Responsibilities

This position will work in the University Human Resources Office but have responsibility for coordinating for training programs for both University and University Library staff. The staff of the University Library exceeds 350, is dispersed at multiple locations and consists of librarians and professional specialists, professional administrative and IT staff and union support staff. In addition, the position will assist the University's Learning and Development program in the design, development and delivery of training programs for all University staff members. The position will also assist the Senior Human Resources Manager assigned to the University Library in the resolution of employee and labor relations problems by providing triage and first level counseling assistance.

Must have a bachelor's degree at a minimum and 4-6 years of experience with facilitation/training, change management and/or employee relations. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of people at all levels in the organization. Superior oral and written communication skills required. Ability to lead project teams or groups not actually supervised. Ability to conceive and create high-quality, meaningful presentations appropriate for multiple audiences Ability to conduct needs assessments in order to evaluate and measure the effectiveness of training and development programs. Description: The Project Archivist will work at the Princeton University Library's Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library, a unit of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. This library houses the Princeton University Archives (current holdings of approximately 15,000 cubic feet) as well as a major collection of 20th-century public policy papers (current holdings of approximately 20,000 cubic feet).

The Public Policy Papers Project Archivist will assist in managing the library’s accessioning processes and work towards the completion of a number of processing, description, and digitization projects. Top priorities include the processing of the Harold Medina Papers. This position will supervise a team of student workers, and will be expected to produce finding aids, catalog records, and other access tools. The position will also participate in the reference activities of the Mudd Manuscript Library and contribute to work relating to EAD development, digitization, and related technical issues. The Project Archivist will report to the Assistant University Archivist for Technical Services.

Qualifications:
Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program with a concentration in archival management, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience processing archival records. Demonstrated ability to appraise historical records. Experience with pragmatic and efficient processing procedures such as those outlined in Greene and Meissner's “More Product, Less Process.” Knowledge of relevant standards for archival description including DACS, EAD, EAC-CPF, and MARC, and familiarity with other metadata standards. Knowledge and awareness of current trends in the digitization of unique and rare scholarly resources for access and preservation. Strong decision-making, project management and supervisory skills. Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently.

Preferred: Experience providing reference services for archives and special collections. Knowledge of 20th century U.S. history.

Description: As part of the Princeton University Library’s Islamic Manuscripts Cataloging and Digitization Project (a grant-funded initiative) the Library seeks a Near Eastern Studies specialist. The Manuscripts Division, Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, holds approximately 9,500 bound Islamic manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish and other languages of the Muslim world written in Arabic script. This constitutes the largest such collection in North America. The primary responsibility of the Islamic Manuscript Cataloger will be to create modern online records for thousands of manuscripts that are now described only in brief or nonstandard fashion. In addition, many other manuscripts have no records whatsoever and require original cataloging. Name authority work, including creating NACO records, is a major feature of the cataloging process. The Islamic Manuscript Cataloger also accessions new acquisitions (approximately 25-30 manuscript volumes per year). This is a challenging position for a Near Eastern studies specialist or librarian seeking to apply advanced skills in a unique research environment. The Islamic Manuscript Cataloger is a member of a project oversight committee of curatorial and technical services staff. The Islamic Manuscript Cataloger will supervise student workers as well as participate in committee work relating to bibliographic description, digitization, and other technical issues. This position reports to the Head of Technical Services for Special Collections.

Qualifications:
Required:
Candidates must have excellent reading knowledge of Arabic and demonstrated working experience with either Persian or Ottoman Turkish. A strong academic background in classical Near Eastern Studies and familiarity with classical Islamic texts and paleography are essential. Candidates must be able to apply ALA-LC romanization tables. Demonstrated ability to meet production deadlines and to work collaboratively with technical services and curatorial staff.

Preferred: Advanced degree in Near Eastern Studies or equivalent education and experience, including scholarly or bibliographic work with premodern Islamic manuscripts, and ALA-accredited master’s degree in library science. Knowledge of other relevant languages. Technical services work experience in a research library using an integrated library system. Knowledge and awareness of current trends in the digitization of rare and unique original research materials, and of metadata formats such as MODS and METS. Familiarity with other relevant software tools such as OCLC Connexion, oXygen, Microsoft Access, and Archivists' Toolkit.
