Documents Association of New Jersey (DANJ) Annual Fall Conference Friday, November 5, 2010 Rutgers Law Library, Center for Law and Justice, Newark
Law librarians from around the state will explore legal reference using freely available government resources, as well as popular subscription databases. All attendees will participate in workshops covering case law, statutes, and administrative law.
John Joergensen, law librarian at Rutgers University Law School Library, Camden, will give the keynote speech. Mr. Joergensen won the 2007 Public Access to Government Information Award, given by the American Association of Law Libraries for the Rutgers-Camden Law School Library Digital Project, which is a full-text archive of over 9300 documents of the United States Congress, dating from the 1970’s through 1998.
Joining Mr. Joergensen to lead the workshops are Hays Butler, Rutgers Law Library, Camden, Sarah Jaramillo, Susan Lyons, and Caroline Young, of Rutgers Law Library, Newark, and Diane Oster, Seton Hall Law Library.
The conference will run from 8:30 AM to 2:30PM, and will be followed by an optional library tour.

Library Web Developer/Designer: Princeton University Library

The Princeton University Library comprises a large central library and nine specialized libraries that are heavily used by an academic community of 6,400 students, 1,100 faculty members, and many visiting scholars. To support the diverse needs of its users, the Library holds some six million printed volumes, ranging from incunabula to current imprints, and provides access to many other records of human knowledge, such as ancient papyri and cylinder seals, modern literary manuscripts, and recently produced electronic databases and journals. The Library employs more than 300 professional and support personnel, complemented by a large student and hourly workforce. Description and Responsibilities:
The Web Developer position will help the Library Web Development Manager on specific projects to deliver more library content and services to our users from our web sites. Specific projects may include designing new sites, or using new web services technologies to improve the user experience in discovering, searching, finding, or acquiring library materials and content. Additionally, the position will assist in implementing the Drupal CMS, customizing the interface for the latest version of the OPAC, and creating mobile ready versions of the library web site and catalog. Customization tasks for the new NextGen Discovery system will be a large component of the work. Projects will also likely include implementation of open source code created in other libraries, using various API’s made available by Google, OCLC, or Code4Lib members, as well as various library vendors. This position will also be assigned other digital library projects as the need arises. Conducting user-centric usability studies is highly desirable, so experience in this area will be preferred.
Qualifications:
Required:
- BA or BS in computer science or related fields
- Thorough knowledge of PHP
- Recent experience with contemporary Web technologies ("Web 2.0"),
especially AJAX and RESTful design
- Knowledge of library bibliographic data and services
- Knowledge of XML and XSLT
- Knowledge of Apache, Tomcat, Jetty
- Demonstrated web graphic design experience
- Ability to complete projects on time
- Excellent communication skills
Preferred:
- Experience in libraries and in library web services development.
- Experience with conducting usability studies
-Experience with Drupal or similar content management system
-Familiarity with OPAC interfaces and faceting
- Knowledge of Java and/or Python
Compensation and Benefits:
Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and accomplishments. Twenty-four (24) vacation days a year, plus eleven (11) paid holidays. Annuity program (TIAA/CREF), group life insurance, health coverage insurance, disability insurance, and other benefits are available.
Rank: This is an Administrative position; grade AIT030, 100% duty time.

Urban Library Journal's Call For Proposals Extended
The editors of Urban Library Journal (ULJ) announce a call for proposals for the Winter 2011 issue.
Urban Library Journal, an open access, refereed journal of research and discussion dealing with all aspects of urban libraries and librarianship, welcomes articles dealing with academic, research, public, school, and special libraries in an urban setting.
Manuscript length should fall between 2,500 and 5,000 words. Full author guidelines can be found on the ULJ website: http://ulj.lacuny.org/. Proposals are due by September 20, 2010. POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES
Reporting to the Head of Information Services, the Information Services Librarian works as one of a team of ten librarians. In collaboration with colleagues, develops and delivers instructional programs to support classroom instruction and online learning at all levels within the curriculum in assigned areas. Acts as a faculty liaison, proactively engaging the faculty in information literacy initiatives, and providing particular support to the new School of Business. Maintains current awareness of the curricular needs, teaching approaches, and research interests of the faculty in assigned departments and makes recommendations to support those activities. In collaboration with colleagues, incorporates use of new technologies to re-conceptualize library instruction to enable students to be self-sufficient in their information seeking. Collects print, electronic and multimedia resources in selected disciplines and provides tailored discipline-related services to faculty and students in those departments of the College and related work as assigned. Maintains knowledge of and engages in the efforts surrounding scholarly publishing, scholarly communication, electronic resources and digital repositories. Provides specialized reference and research assistance including identification of sources and consultation on development of research strategies. Participates in the delivery of information/reference services through both traditional and virtual means. Proactively collaborates with others in identifying, designing, and/or introducing new information products and services, and consults with faculty, staff, and students to provide innovative tools to manage knowledge and communication. Serves on and contributes to College and University committees. Librarians within the City University of New York are expected to take active faculty roles and to engage in scholarly research and publication in their fields. Note that the work schedule during the academic year includes participation in the regular weekend and evening rotations.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Required Qualifications:
- ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.
- Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in business, economics, or related field, or experience in business or business-research environment coupled with an undergraduate degree in another field.
- One or more years of professional experience in an academic, research, corporate, or large public library.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills and interpersonal skills.
- Experience developing collaborative working relationships and working on shared projects.
- Commitment to innovative and effective user-centered services.
Strongly Preferred Qualifications:
- Second graduate degree required for appointment above the rank of Instructor. (Note: If candidate does not have a second graduate degree at the time of appointment, appointment will be at the level of Instructor, and candidates must complete a second graduate degree within 5 years. Upon earning the second graduate degree, the candidate will be promoted to the tenure-track rank of Assistant Professor.)
- Experience with and knowledge of current information resources in business and/or economics.
- Experience with and/or academic background in one or more areas of business and/or economics.
- Experience in developing working partnerships with clientele and/or other communities.
- Commitment to innovative and effective user-centered services.
- Solid understanding of issues such as emerging trends in scholarly communications, Web 2.0 and beyond, usage of technology to enhance user experiences in libraries, innovative delivery of resources and services, etc.
