Assistant Keeper, North Carolina Collection Gallery: UNC Chapel Hill University Library

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an experienced, creative, and collaborative individual for the position of Assistant Keeper of the North Carolina Collection Gallery.

Located in the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library, the North Carolina Collection Gallery is a 3,000-square foot suite of exhibition areas and historic period rooms. It offers exhibitions and related programs that interpret North Carolina history, literature, and culture.

Under the supervision of the Gallery Keeper, the Assistant Keeper will assist with the installation of exhibitions, develop and deliver statewide educational programs for both broad and targeted audiences, give guided tours of the Gallery, and help organize various promotional and outreach activities. The Assistant Keeper will maintain Gallery web pages and plan and help implement the expansion of the Gallery’s online presence, including the creation of online exhibits. Other responsibilities include assisting with the record-keeping and management of a collection of 22,000 historic objects and performing other administrative tasks and related duties. These include hiring, training, scheduling, and monitoring assignments for student assistants, and identifying equipment and supply needs.

The Gallery is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. Occasional weekend hours may be required for this position.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required: ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science, or master's degree in American history, public history, museum studies, or related field. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated experience with web page creation and html. Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds. Personal commitment to service and professional growth and development

Preferred: Two or more years of full-time work experience in a library, museum, historic site, or other cultural heritage institution. Demonstrated experience with Adobe Dreamweaver and content management systems. Experience in interpretive services and educational programming. Skills related to the development of informal, interactive activities. Experience creating displays or exhibits. Coursework in or working knowledge of North Carolina history. Knowledge of professional museum practices and standards. Supervisory experience.

This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Major Project Responsibilities:

Represent the University Library throughout the Firestone Library Renovation process and coordinate with senior library administrators, library users, library staff, Facilities Management, and other relevant University offices. Review all Firestone construction and renovation documents. Serve as the Library's liaison with a range of University offices, including Facilities Department management and staff, Library staff and maintenance personnel, and external consultants. In conjunction with library staff, develop, implement, and maintain a communication program for the Library staff and the University community.

Characteristic Duties:

25% Liaison with the construction management team

· Attend meetings with project team

· Coordinate and attend meetings with project team and library groups to coordinate user needs.

· Review and provide comments on all project drawings and relevant documentation

· Assist in the development of project phasing plans to construct project in occupied operational library

· Coordinate all space access issues for various contractors, architects and other external groups

· Assist in the development of a plan to maintain security and access for all Firestone spaces

30% Establish, coordinate and assist internal library planning groups in
connection with planning, renovation and implementation tasks for the following:

· Space and program needs

· Workspace relocations

· Collection relocations

· Carrel and workstation prototype development and evaluation

· Access policies and processes for construction personnel

· Collection access

· Maintenance and coordination of internal documents and files

15% Coordinate temporary and permanent work space moves and materials shifts with library staff and external contractors and consultants.

25% Develop, implement, and maintain a communication program about Firestone renovation for the library staff and the University community.

5% Serve as liaison to appropriate campus groups to communicate short and long term project goals and impacts..

Knowledge and Skills for the Position:

Five years relevant construction experience (project management or related) and library experience required. Must have an in-depth working knowledge of university level research library operations. Accredited MLS is preferred. Must possess strong project management skills, excellent quantitative, analytical, planning, and writing skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary in order to communicate and work with a wide range of user groups, library and university administrators and staff, and contractors and consultants. Understanding and experience with library operations is essential. An understanding of facilities management and construction operations is important. Must be able to exercise considerable initiative and work independently. Proficiency with microcomputer spreadsheet and related software required.

Comments:

This position will report to the University Library Fiscal Officer as a staff position.
Firestone Library is one of the biggest buildings on campus, with 430,000 square feet. It is also one of the most heavily used buildings, and its collections and services are essential to a Princeton education. The Firestone Renovation Project will entail structural repairs, thoroughgoing installation of modern infrastructure, and program re-arrangements. The work will be phased over an 8-year period, during which the library must remain open.
The position is funded through the Firestone Library Renovation capital project budget.

Compensation and Benefits: Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and accomplishments. Twenty-four (24) vacation days a year, plus eleven (11) paid holidays. Annuity program (TIAA/CREF/Vanguard), group life insurance, health coverage insurance, disability insurance, and other benefits are available.

Rank: This is an Administrative position, grade ADM 060, 100% duty time.
