The 2011 ACRL/NY Annual Symposium “The Global Librarian: Information without Borders” will focus on academic librarians who serve increasingly diverse populations, across a variety of platforms at home and around the world. · mobile devices, services and other innovative technologies used in teaching, reference, and professional communication
· role of social networking in teaching , communication, and professional development
· courseware design, online meeting platforms
· services to international student populations
· library exchange programs
· scholarly communication and open access
· literacy skills for distance education
· visual and/or technological literacy
· distance education librarians
· copyright in the international environment
· training programs and workshops to prepare librarians for work in the global environment
Please email a 100-200 word abstract of your poster session proposal to Symposium Planning Committee member Gloria Meisel at https://exchange.mercy.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=64145e36f9974587bea0e4260a90a68f&URL=mailto%3agloria.meisel%40sunywcc.edu by September 19, 2011. Description:
What happens to our rights as readers when books go digital? Librarian Alycia Sellie and Technologist Matthew Goins will challenge the status quo of book digitization and argue that a careless migration to electronic books may destroy well-established rights that readers have held historically with print. More than just an issue of convenience, this talk will examine restrictive licensing agreements and closed technologies used in current digitization projects and outline alternatives.

AAP is committed to the belief that art and design are simultaneously intellectual and material practices, and that leadership in cultural production demands deep expertise both in a specific discipline and in the liberal arts. Students and faculty in the College make extensive use of visual materials in their teaching and research.
With the completion of the College’s new studio addition Milstein Hall, AAP is reprogramming portions of the existing buildings, including the existing FAL. The FAL is scheduled to move from Sibley Hall into Rand Hall in the near future, triggering both a spatial and programmatic reconceptualization of the library to fully integrate new technologies and innovative space usage. The College recently moved away from slides as the principle medium of visual images, and the VR Librarian will need to provide to a high level of service in assisting with this transition. The faculty, students and administration of the college will turn to the VR Librarian for leadership and vision in realizing a world-class, contemporary art and design library.
