ACRL/NY Special Collections and Archives Group Meeting Sept. 17

Are you an archivist, or librarian who spends part of your time working in an archive? If so, please attend the "open house" meeting of the Special Collections and Archives Discussion Group, part of the Association of College and Research Libraries Greater New York Metropolitan Area Chapter (ACRL/NY), on Friday, 17 September from 9:15-10:45. Documents Association of New Jersey (DANJ) Annual Fall Conference Friday, November 5, 2010 Rutgers Law Library, Center for Law and Justice, Newark

On Friday, November 5, 2010, the Documents Association of New Jersey (DANJ) will present Legal Reference in the Digital Age. The Conference will be held at the Rutgers Law Library, Center for Law and Justice, 123 Washington Street, Newark, New Jersey.

Law librarians from around the state will explore legal reference using freely available government resources, as well as popular subscription databases. All attendees will participate in workshops covering case law, statutes, and administrative law.

John Joergensen, law librarian at Rutgers University Law School Library, Camden, will give the keynote speech. Mr. Joergensen won the 2007 Public Access to Government Information Award, given by the American Association of Law Libraries for the Rutgers-Camden Law School Library Digital Project, which is a full-text archive of over 9300 documents of the United States Congress, dating from the 1970’s through 1998.

Joining Mr. Joergensen to lead the workshops are Hays Butler, Rutgers Law Library, Camden, Sarah Jaramillo, Susan Lyons, and Caroline Young, of Rutgers Law Library, Newark, and Diane Oster, Seton Hall Law Library.

The conference will run from 8:30 AM to 2:30PM, and will be followed by an optional library tour.

Library Web Developer/Designer: Princeton University Library

The Princeton University Library comprises a large central library and nine specialized libraries that are heavily used by an academic community of 6,400 students, 1,100 faculty members, and many visiting scholars. To support the diverse needs of its users, the Library holds some six million printed volumes, ranging from incunabula to current imprints, and provides access to many other records of human knowledge, such as ancient papyri and cylinder seals, modern literary manuscripts, and recently produced electronic databases and journals. The Library employs more than 300 professional and support personnel, complemented by a large student and hourly workforce. Description and Responsibilities:
The Web Developer position will help the Library Web Development Manager on specific projects to deliver more library content and services to our users from our web sites. Specific projects may include designing new sites, or using new web services technologies to improve the user experience in discovering, searching, finding, or acquiring library materials and content. Additionally, the position will assist in implementing the Drupal CMS, customizing the interface for the latest version of the OPAC, and creating mobile ready versions of the library web site and catalog. Customization tasks for the new NextGen Discovery system will be a large component of the work. Projects will also likely include implementation of open source code created in other libraries, using various API’s made available by Google, OCLC, or Code4Lib members, as well as various library vendors. This position will also be assigned other digital library projects as the need arises. Conducting user-centric usability studies is highly desirable, so experience in this area will be preferred.

Qualifications:
Required:
- BA or BS in computer science or related fields
- Thorough knowledge of PHP
- Recent experience with contemporary Web technologies ("Web 2.0"),
especially AJAX and RESTful design
- Knowledge of library bibliographic data and services
- Knowledge of XML and XSLT
- Knowledge of Apache, Tomcat, Jetty
- Demonstrated web graphic design experience
- Ability to complete projects on time
- Excellent communication skills

Preferred:
- Experience in libraries and in library web services development.
- Experience with conducting usability studies
-Experience with Drupal or similar content management system
-Familiarity with OPAC interfaces and faceting
- Knowledge of Java and/or Python

Compensation and Benefits:

Urban Library Journal's Call For Proposals Extended

The editors of Urban Library Journal (ULJ) announce a call for proposals for the Winter 2011 issue.

Urban Library Journal, an open access, refereed journal of research and discussion dealing with all aspects of urban libraries and librarianship, welcomes articles dealing with academic, research, public, school, and special libraries in an urban setting.

Manuscript length should fall between 2,500 and 5,000 words. Full author guidelines can be found on the ULJ website: http://ulj.lacuny.org/. Proposals are due by September 20, 2010. Proactively collaborates with others in identifying, designing, and/or introducing new information products and services, and consults with faculty, staff, and students to provide innovative tools to manage knowledge and communication. Serves on and contributes to College and University committees. Required Qualifications:
  • ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.
  • Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in business, economics, or related field, or experience in business or business-research environment coupled with an undergraduate degree in another field.

Adjunct Ref position available, CUNY Graduate Center

The Mina Rees Library, CUNY Graduate Center seeks an Adjunct Reference Librarian to work up to 12 hrs/week. Flexible schedule late afternoon/early evenings. The position is will be available August 30th.

Primary responsibilities include electronic and reference desk services and teaching graduate level workshops. May also provide some support to Interlibrary Loan services and collection projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:
For Instructor, an MLS from an ALA-accredited program is required. For appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor an additional masters degree (preferably in a Humanities or Social Sciences field) is required. Strong public-service orientation and familiarity with media, print and electronic information resources and emerging information technologies required. Relevant experience preferred.

Responsibilities:
The Princeton University Library seeks an energetic and creative subject specialist to build library collections and help shape library services in the interdisciplinary fields of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies. This Librarian works closely with the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, the Program in Russian and Eurasian Studies, and faculty and students from many other relevant departments and interdisciplinary programs. Reporting directly to the Associate University Librarian for Collection Development, the librarian is responsible for identifying and acquiring library materials covering a wide range of subjects, in all formats and from all parts of the world, in western languages and select languages of the region. The librarian also functions as the key Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies resource person in the Library system, with the necessary expertise to provide assistance to students and faculty in teaching, researching and studying any aspects of this interdisciplinary field.

This is one of many subject specialist professional positions devoted to developing and interpreting Princeton's collections. Responsibilities include: current and retrospective collection building in all formats; managing sizable acquisitions funds and associated approval plans; advising on preservation, digitization, and other aspects of collection maintenance, including selection of materials for offsite storage; overseeing collections in the Slavic Languages & Literatures Graduate Study Room in Firestone Library; and providing specialized research assistance to Princeton University faculty and students, researchers affiliated with neighboring institutions, and visiting scholars from the U.S. and abroad. The librarian also provides instruction in the use of print and electronic materials; creates resource guides and Web sites to assist Princeton researchers; serves as the Library’s key liaison to the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, the Program in Russian and Eurasian Studies and other constituencies working on this world area; consults with members of the Technical Services Department to facilitate timely acquisitions and processing of materials from and about Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia (including some in the languages of the region). This librarian represents Princeton in the relevant regional, national, and international professional and scholarly organizations, including the East Coast Consortium of Slavic Collections (ECCSC), the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), the Slavic and East European Microfilm Project (SEEMP), and others.

Qualifications:
Required: an ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library science, plus an advanced degree in a discipline (literature, history, social science) of Slavic, E. European or Eurasian studies; or an equivalent combination of education and library experience. Proficiency in Russian. Candidates must demonstrate mastery of the bibliographic tools, including electronic resources, available for the use of researchers in this field, especially in literature, humanities and social sciences. Candidates should be knowledgeable about the Russian and East European book trades, current and antiquarian, current research and publishing trends in this field worldwide, and the changing technological environment in research libraries; they should also demonstrate an interest in developing innovative services for researchers. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.

Preferred: Proficiency in another Slavic or East European language. Successful teaching experience, either in the classroom or in library instruction; familiarity with collaborative library projects such as the Center for Research Libraries, Global Resource Network, etc.; and knowledge of the strengths of other research collections, particularly in Slavic, Eurasian and East European studies.

Architecture Archives Curator: University of Florida - George A. Smathers Libraries



The University of Florida - George A. Smathers Libraries seeks an innovative and knowledgeable Architecture Archives Curator. This is a non-tenure accruing faculty position which manages and develops the Architecture Archives in the Department of Special and Area Studies. The Architecture Archives Curator will work closely with faculty and students in the College of Design, Construction and Planning, and will provide researcher assistance, instruction, and outreach to support academic programs in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, construction and design. The Architecture Archives Curator will work collaboratively with archivists and librarians in the Department of Special and Area Studies Collections, librarians in the Architecture and Fine Arts Library, and with digital and technical services librarians and staff to improve library services for users. A key responsibility of this position is to facilitate successful fundraising activities and other appropriate library development efforts: working closely with the Smathers Libraries Development Office, maintaining excellent relations with existing donors, and identifying and cultivating relationships with potential donors.

The International Research Journal of Library, Information and Archival Studies is a multidisciplinary peer-reviewed journal that will be published monthly by International Research Journals (http://interesjournals.org/IRJLIAS). Reference Librarian - Part-Time: The College of Staten Island

The College of Staten Island, a senior college of the City University of New York, seeks two (2) adjunct reference librarians for evenings and weekend hours for up to 15 hours per week during the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters. The librarian must have a strong public service orientation and an ability to respond to the reference needs of both students and faculty.

Responsibilities:
Provide comprehensive reference, research, and referral service in a team based, client centered environment. Teach and assist users in identifying, locating, and interpreting sources of information, irrespective of format. Assist with Library projects, assignments, and initiatives as designated.

Required Qualifications:
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program. Demonstrated experience in a library reference setting. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Compensation:
Beginning at $37.77 per hour (depending on qualifications)
